[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Hyundai Wia will mass-produce the first rear-wheel electronic limited slip differential (e-LSD) for vehicles in Korea. The e-LSD being produced this time will be installed in Genesis's first sports utility vehicle (SUV), the 'GV80', which was recently launched.
Hyundai Wia announced on the 20th that it has completed the development of the e-LSD and started mass production. It is expected to be produced at an annual scale of about 60,000 units at Hyundai Wia's Changwon Plant 2 in Seongsan-gu, Changwon, Gyeongnam. This is the first time a domestic auto parts company has produced a rear-wheel e-LSD.
The e-LSD developed by Hyundai Wia is a component that actively controls the driving force delivered to the wheels according to the vehicle's driving conditions. It distributes the driving force between the left and right wheels according to the road surface and driving situation to enable stable driving in any environment. During straight driving, the same power is distributed to the left and right wheels, but in situations where one wheel may slip, such as during sharp cornering, power is concentrated on the opposite wheel to help the vehicle escape.
Hyundai Wia has raised the most important 'response speed' to a world-class level. Using a hydraulic actuator, it senses minute pressure changes occurring in the vehicle depending on road conditions and driving situations and distributes optimal driving power within 0.25 seconds. The maximum torque capacity deliverable to the wheels reaches 235 kgf·m. This also has the advantage of being applicable to most passenger cars and SUVs.
Won Kwang-min, Executive Director of Hyundai Wia Vehicle Parts Research Center, said, "This product incorporates all the know-how accumulated from making front-wheel e-LSDs installed in Hyundai Motor's i30N, Veloster N, and others," adding, "It will allow drivers to enjoy stable driving fun in any situation."
With the mass production of this rear-wheel e-LSD, Hyundai Wia has established a full-line mass production system for four-wheel drive parts. Through this, Hyundai Wia plans to actively pursue orders for four-wheel drive parts from global automakers.
