[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) launched the local currency ‘Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate’ on the 15th, which surpassed 100 million KRW in sales within two days of issuance, achieving the highest sales among Seoul’s autonomous districts.

The mobile gift certificate ‘Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate’ can be used at 9,471 Zero Pay affiliated stores located in Yeongdeungpo, including restaurants, marts, and convenience stores. Individuals can purchase up to 500,000 KRW per month, with a 7% discount applied at purchase, providing a maximum benefit of 420,000 KRW if purchased monthly for one year.

The district offered an exceptional benefit of up to a 10% discount during the special sales period, including the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, starting from the initial issuance date on the 15th, boosting residents’ purchasing motivation.

On the first day of issuance, the 15th, the district actively promoted the gift certificate to residents at the ‘2020 Dong New Year Greeting Meeting.’ At the entrance of the Dong Community Center where the meeting was held, staff wearing promotional placards and sashes welcomed residents and provided information about the issuance and benefits of the gift certificate.

Additionally, around 11 a.m., after the first Dong New Year Greeting Meeting of the year in Yeongdeungpo Bon-dong, the district held a ‘Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate Issuance Commemorative Demonstration’ at a nearby convenience store.

At the demonstration, Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Chae Hyun-il attended with two residents, leading by example by charging the gift certificate through the ‘CheckPay’ app and using it to purchase and pay for goods.

As a result of this proactive promotion in the early issuance stage, sales of the ‘Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate’ exceeded 100 million KRW on the second day of issuance, the 16th, and by the morning of the 17th, it achieved over 1,000 purchase transactions and sales amounting to 125.56 million KRW.

So far, a total of 17 autonomous districts, including Yeongdeungpo-gu, have issued local currencies, and by June, participation will increase to 21 districts with four more joining.

In particular, Yeongdeungpo-gu, along with Jongno-gu, is issuing the largest scale of gift certificates among autonomous districts, amounting to 20 billion KRW.

The district plans to promote the use of the gift certificates to all residents of Yeongdeungpo by touring all Dong Community Centers in line with the Dong New Year Greeting Meetings held sequentially until the 31st.

Furthermore, the district will continue a 10% discount event until sales reach 3 billion KRW, while continuously expanding Zero Pay affiliated stores to spread gift certificate usage, increase local consumption, boost small business sales, and revitalize the local economy.

The ‘Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate’ can be easily purchased after identity verification, membership registration, and account linkage through nine apps including ‘CheckPay.’ The usage method is the same as the existing Zero Pay payment system.

Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Chae Hyun-il stated, “The Yeongdeungpo Sarang Gift Certificate has received great response from the early issuance stage, greatly helping to revive local small businesses,” and added, “We will continue to promote it and prepare various benefits so that more residents can use it.”
