As of the end of 2019, 853 registered aircraft in Korea
More than half of new additions are LCCs... 20 more to be introduced this year

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] As of the end of December last year, the total number of aircraft registered in South Korea was 853. This represents an increase of 18 aircraft (2.2%) compared to 2018, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expects the number of registered aircraft to exceed 1000 within the next four years.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 19th, the currently registered aircraft in Korea include 414 aircraft for international and domestic transportation business, 29 for small air transportation, 176 for aircraft usage business, and 234 for other non-business purposes, totaling 853 aircraft.
Compared to the previous year, the number of international and domestic transportation business aircraft increased by 16 (10 for LCCs, 6 for major airlines), small air transportation by 1, and non-business by 2. The introduction of aircraft by low-cost carriers (LCCs) accounted for more than half of the new additions.
Korean Air had the highest number of registered aircraft with 170, followed by Asiana Airlines (86), Jeju Air (45), T'way Air (28), Jin Air and Air Busan (26 each), Eastar Jet (23), Air Seoul (7), Fly Gangwon (2), and Air Incheon (1).
A total of 48 new aircraft were registered last year. These included 28 for international and domestic transportation business (19 LCC, 9 major airlines), 3 for small air transportation business, 7 for aircraft usage business, and 10 for non-business purposes.
The number of deregistrations due to lease expirations, sales, etc., totaled 30, including 12 for international and domestic transportation business (9 LCC, 3 major airlines), 2 for small air transportation business, and 8 each for aircraft usage business and non-business purposes.
The company that introduced the most new transportation business aircraft last year was Jeju Air, which introduced 8 aircraft and deregistered 3. T'way Air introduced 5 and deregistered 1, Asiana Airlines introduced 5 and deregistered 2, and Korean Air introduced 4 and deregistered 1.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expects the total number of aircraft to exceed 1000 within the next four years, considering the current trend of aircraft registration increases and decreases.
The number of aircraft has significantly increased from 477 in 2009 to 655 in 2014, and 853 last year.
The Ministry explained, "The number of registered aircraft exceeded 853 at the end of last year, and it is expected that about 20 new aircraft will be introduced this year, including new introductions by low-cost carriers."
