[Asia Economy Reporters Lee Ji-eun and Kim Hye-min] Kim Hyung-o, the chairman of the Liberty Korea Party’s nomination committee, announced that he will prioritize 'fairness' and 'transparency' in candidate selection and proceed with a major reshuffle. He also expressed agreement on the necessity of unification and emphasized that those leading the unification must have a sense of urgency.

At a press conference held on the 17th at the National Assembly main building, Chairman Kim stated, "Candidate selection must be conducted fairly," adding, "I want to show that 'this is fairness' by handling it fairly through the nomination committee." He continued, "It must be transparent. While we cannot treat everything like looking through a glass, we will operate independently and neutrally," emphasizing transparency by saying, "We will not be swayed by anyone nor be interfered with."

He also stressed the need for a reshuffle of veteran lawmakers. He said, "Since we are managing candidate selection, we will actually focus more on bringing in many new faces rather than just reshuffling," and added, "I believe the 21st National Assembly should show a reshuffle and overhaul, and we will make every effort to bring many new talents into our party."

He expressed sympathy for the cause of conservative unification and urged participants to engage with a more desperate attitude. Chairman Kim appealed, "The presidential power is gradually becoming imperial, and the separation of powers is almost collapsing now," and said, "I ask those discussing unification to have a spirit of urgency and determination to protect the Republic of Korea."

Within the party, there is great expectation that Chairman Kim will proceed with a large-scale reshuffle without personal bias. Although classified as pro-Lee Myung-bak faction, he is evaluated to be neutral as he has not built his own faction within the party. One official said, "He is basically a pacifist and a principled person. He will try not to create unnecessary conflicts or noise, but if something goes against principles, he is someone who can take action even against pro-Lee faction lawmakers." His long experience in politics and thorough understanding of the candidate selection mechanism and party personnel are also considered strengths.

The key issue is the relationship with the party leader. The phrase "candidate selection is done by the party leader" has become commonplace, as party leaders have wielded actual authority over the process. It is also reported that Chairman Kim initially refused the party’s offer, saying he could not play the role of a 'puppet villain.' There is analysis that his acceptance of the nomination committee chairmanship indicates that he was granted a certain degree of full authority. Chairman Kim also responded to a reporter’s question that day by saying, "Representative Hwang said he would give me full authority."
