[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The U.S. Senate officially began the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on the 16th (local time). The full trial will start on the 21st.

Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court took the oath as the presiding judge of the Senate impeachment trial and also administered the oath to the senators. U.S. media showed great interest, focusing on the solemn scene of Chief Justice Roberts taking the oath.

After taking the oath, Judge Roberts asked the senators, "Do you solemnly swear to do impartial justice according to the Constitution and the laws in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump?" The senators responded, "Yes." Subsequently, 99 out of the 100 senators participated in the oath.

After taking the oath, the senators signed the roll to complete the procedure for jury duty. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, who led the impeachment along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, read the articles of impeachment and continued the offensive against President Trump.

The full trial against President Trump is scheduled to begin on the 21st, the day after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

As the Senate impeachment trial began that day, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction on his Twitter, saying, "Impeached for a perfect phone call."

Another unfavorable statement against President Trump emerged. The main figure was Lev Parnas, an associate of Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's personal lawyer.

In an interview with MSNBC on the 15th, when asked what the key lie in the impeachment process was, Parnas said, "It is that the president did not know. President Trump definitely knew how things were progressing." He claimed, "I do nothing without Giuliani's or the president's permission."

President Trump again claimed he did not know Parnas. After Parnas's interview was broadcast, President Trump met with reporters at the White House and denied any relationship with Parnas, saying, "I don't know who this person is."
