Making Mapo-gu Warmer... "Let's Raise the Temperature of Sharing Together"

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) announced that it has been raising donations to help neighbors in need through the ‘2020 Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign’ from November 20 last year to February 19 this year.

The ‘Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign’ has been a public-private joint cooperation project since 2001, established through an agreement between Seoul City and the Seoul Social Welfare Community Chest. Mapo-gu also conducts various fundraising activities every winter.

This season, a new fundraising method different from previous ones was added. Representative examples include a fundraising live broadcast held with D’Live in December last year and the ‘Love Thermometer’ installed in the lobby of Mapo-gu Office.

On December 5 last year, the fundraising live broadcast vividly showed the warm appearance of residents donating to neighbors in need, and stage interviews were conducted, providing an opportunity to spread sharing from the perspective of ordinary donors rather than representatives of companies or organizations.

On that day, Mapo-gu employees also contributed a total of 10,588,200 KRW by pooling their resources.

Additionally, to widely promote the fundraising and establish a culture of donation, a new Love Thermometer was installed in the first-floor lobby of Mapo-gu Office. This thermometer will remain in place until the end of the fundraising period on February 19, allowing a clear view of the amount raised by Mapo-gu.

Currently, the thermometer reads 92℃, indicating that 92% of the target fundraising amount of 800 million KRW has been achieved. In terms of amount, this exceeds approximately 740 million KRW. (As of January 14, 2020, including cash donations plus 50% of in-kind donations)

The donations and goods collected through the ‘Hope Ondol Warm Winter Campaign’ will be used throughout 2020 for living expenses, housing costs, medical expenses, education expenses, and more for neighbors in need in the community.

This support plays a significant role as a stepping stone until residents in crisis situations can receive institutional assistance, making the meaning of this fundraising very important.

Residents wishing to participate in the fundraising event can contact the Mapo-gu Welfare Policy Division (3153-8833) or their local community service center for inquiries.

Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun of Mapo-gu said, “Participation itself is more important than the amount,” and added, “In 2020, I hope everyone will send warm hands to our neighbors who are struggling to endure the cold winter to make Mapo a happier place for all residents.”
