According to Gyeongbuk Province on the 15th, as of January, the registered population of the new town is 17,443, an increase of 1,126 from 16,317 at the end of last September.
More than half of the new town residents have relocated from Andong and Yecheon. 39.1% moved from Andong, and 17.3% from Yecheon.
The population moving in from other cities and provinces accounts for 12.4%. Including those who have not reported their move, the actual resident population is 23,120, which is 1,450 more than three months ago.
The number of commercial and convenience facilities slightly increased from 712 to 729 in three months. These include 202 general restaurants, 128 academies, 39 cafes, and 17 medical facilities.
In November last year, the Gyeongbuk Library, a complex cultural space, opened. There are 4,230 students attending educational facilities including 29 daycare centers, 5 kindergartens, 2 elementary schools, and one each of middle and high schools.
This year, the new town will see the completion of a Work-Family Balance Support Center, the government Gyeongbuk regional joint office building, and the sale of public rental apartments with 869 households.
Lee Seok-ho, Director of New Town Development in Gyeongbuk Province, said, "We are actively promoting the relocation of related organizations and groups to early activate the new town and attract population," adding, "We will also put more effort into improving the residential environment."
