[Asia Economy Reporter Hyun-ui Cho] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 8th that it has identified 12 food, livestock, and health functional food manufacturers that intentionally and repeatedly violated the Food Sanitation Act.
The Ministry, together with 17 local governments, conducted intensive inspections of a total of 290 companies from October 28 to December 20 last year. The main violations were ▲expiration date falsification (1 company) ▲failure to prepare production logs and raw material transaction records (2 companies) ▲facility standard violations (4 companies) ▲violations of hygienic handling standards, etc. (5 companies).
A meat sales business operator located in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, was administratively penalized in May 2018 for failing to report the manufacturing of two types of packaged meat products. During this inspection, he was caught falsifying the expiration date by attaching stickers that extended the expiration date of Bukchae (packaged chicken meat) products by 17 days. The business is scheduled to be closed.
For the identified companies, the relevant local governments will take administrative actions and re-inspect within three months to verify improvements. A Ministry of Food and Drug Safety official stated, "We will strengthen follow-up management of operators who intentionally violate the Food Sanitation Act."
