To retain transparent, spiritual beauty and simultaneously to refine it constitute the range of the proper methodology for both the interpretation of tradition and the unbroken continuity of it.

그의 최근 작업은 이 같은 그의 지속적인 작업의 연장선상에 놓여 있으면서도 훨씬 혁신적인 차원을 지닌다는 점에서 주목된다. 종이를 다섯 겹 정도로 발라 올려(배접) 두께를 만든 후, 이 위에다 수묵과 부분적으로 채색을 가미하는데서 그의 작업은 시작된다.

Her recent work is called attention to in that it is on the same continuum of her coherent artistic tendency on one hand, yet on the other it is elevated to a much more innovative dimension. Her work starts with adding matte black or colored ink here and there over a mass produced by layering of paper.

화면에 이미지를 그려 나가는 것이 아니라 화면을 뜯어내면서 이미지를 구조적으로 만들어 나가는 작업이다. 그리는 작업이 아니라 구조화해 가는 작업이다. 안료를 쌓아올려 가는 방식에서는 도저히 기대할 수 없는 깊이의 아름다움이 생겨나게 된다.

This is not to draw an image on the picture plane but to structure it by removing the picture plane. Not to dray, but to structure. There is generated the beauty of depth that one can never expect to experience in the works made of filed pigments.

안으로 깊어지는 자욱한 맛은 어떤 방법으로도 쉽게 획득될 수 없는 그 독창적 방법이 실현해 낸 아름다움이다. 거기 분명 모란이 피어나기도 하고 목련의 청초한 모습이 걷잡히면서도 설명을 벗어난 존재로서 우리 앞에 다가오고 있는 것이다.

The subtle nuance that goes into the inside is realized by a distinctively original art-making technique that cannot be easily obtained. There a peony is blossoming or a magnolia is blooming with its innocent face, but they come to us as a being that denies any explanation.

그것은 완성되었다기보다 생성되어 가는 저 은밀한 생명의 과정을 구현해내는데 불가피한 방법으로 보이며 그러기에 더욱 함축적이요 시적이다.

Such a way of art-making seems to be necessary in order to embody the process of life that is becoming, not completed, and as a result the embodied object becomes to retain a more entailing and poetic character.

◇김춘옥
서울대 회화과 및 세종대 대학원 졸업. 선화랑, 조선화랑, 필립강 갤러리, 갤러리 우덕(서울),렉서스 갤러리(대구) 등에서 개인전을 34회 가졌다. 국립현대미술관 및 서울시립미술관 운영위원 등을 역임하고 2003년 대한민국 옥관문화훈장을 받았다. 작품소장처로 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경남도립미술관, 예술의전당, 세종문화회관, 일민미술관, 월전미술관, 뉴욕 한국문화원, 버지니아 뮤지엄 등 다수이다.
