Suncheon, often referred to as the “No. 1 political district in South Jeolla,” has emerged at the center of a volatile election landscape. On the surface, the current officeholder advantage appears to be holding, but there are predictions that President Lee Jaemyung’s schedule, reportedly set for April, could become a new turning point. While the numbers remain relatively stable, analysts note that the political landscape is still open to unexpected variables.
◆ The Basic Structure Favors the Incumbent
In recent hypothetical opinion polls, independent Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu showed an overall advantage over candidates from the Democratic Party of Korea. Although the gap with some candidates is not substantial, the consensus is that the “incumbency premium” is in effect. Administrative experience, local name recognition, and organizational stability are interpreted as his core strengths.
◆ President’s April Schedule Is the Biggest Variable
Local political circles are now focused on April. This is because there are multiple scenarios being discussed in which President Lee, accompanied by his spouse Kim Hye-kyung, would revisit Sorokdo-a location they visited during the previous presidential campaign-and pass through Suncheon as part of the itinerary.
If the government, in connection with this visit, were to announce concrete mid- to long-term plans for tailored strategic industry development in the eastern South Jeolla region (Suncheon, Yeosu, Gwangyang), expansion of transportation networks, strengthening of medical infrastructure, and plans related to the aerospace industry and national industrial complexes, the trip could expand beyond a simple visit to generate a “policy convention effect.” This could serve to rally the party’s base and also raise expectations among moderate voters.
◆ Could This Signal a Shift Toward a Close Race?
The baseline for the current race is an incumbent advantage. However, in segments where the gap is not wide, there is potential for the race to be shaken by political mobilization or external variables.
Some analysts suggest that if a presidential visit is combined with concrete policy announcements, it could provide a symbolic-and potentially practical-catalyst for a transition to a more competitive race among candidates in contention.
South Jeolla is traditionally considered a core stronghold for the Democratic Party of Korea. The president’s visit alone could serve as a rallying signal for the party’s supporters. At the same time, tangible policies related to industry, transportation, and healthcare could generate real expectations among voters.
On the other hand, if Mayor Noh maintains his image as an “independent who can cooperate with the government,” some analysts believe the impact of the policy effects could be partially offset.
◆ Central Party Strategic Nomination: Another Inflection Point
In addition, if the Democratic Party of Korea designates Suncheon as a “central party strategic nomination” district, the situation could change significantly. This would go beyond a simple visit or message, signaling the party’s official commitment to policy, budget, and legislative roadmaps.
However, depending on how the president’s schedule in April unfolds, the announcement of strategic policies for the eastern South Jeolla region, and whether the central party implements a strategic nomination, it is difficult to rule out the possibility that this election could evolve from a quiet race with a clear favorite into a potentially close contest.
