A Geological and Ecological Treasure Featuring Sheer Cliffs and Donggang Pasqueflowers
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on March 1, 2026, that it has selected Jeongseon-gun's "Donggang" as the "Geological and Ecological Landmark" for March 2026.

Jeongseon's Donggang is a representative incised meandering river in Korea, renowned as a treasure trove of geological and geomorphological landscapes. Over a long period, the river's repeated processes of erosion and sedimentation have given rise to a continuous development of cliffs, sandbars, gravel bars, river terraces, and floodplains.
In particular, a variety of riverine and karst landforms, such as limestone caves formed along the limestone zone, add significant academic value. Donggang is recognized as a representative natural heritage site where visitors can clearly observe the process of river landform formation.
The Donggang basin was designated as an Ecological and Landscape Conservation Area in 2002 and, in 2017, was included as a geological site in the Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark, affirming its geological and ecological excellence. Today, it is firmly established as a leading destination for nature and ecological tourism in southern Gangwon Province.
Especially in March, Donggang is adorned with the bloom of "Donggang Pasqueflowers" (Dongganghalmiggot), which emerge from the cliffs and crevices along the river, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of spring.
From March 27 to 29, 2026, the "2026 Jeongseon Donggang Pasqueflower Festival" will be held throughout the Jeongseon Donggang Ecological Learning Center area. A variety of cultural events-including performances, exhibitions, and hands-on programs-are planned to offer visitors a memorable spring getaway.
Nearby, there are various tourist attractions such as Byeongbongsan County Park (Byeongbongchi Skywalk), Jeongseon Wood Culture Experience Center, and Jeongseon Arirang Market (Jeongseon 5-Day Market). Visitors can enjoy a combination of scenic drives along Donggang, experiential activities, panoramic views, and traditional markets. The region also offers a well-developed accommodation infrastructure, including resorts, pensions, and campsites, making it ideal for extended stays.
An official from Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province commented, "Jeongseon's Donggang is the premier natural heritage site of southern Gangwon Province, where the geological landscapes sculpted by the river over countless years harmonize with pristine ecological environments. We hope that in March, visitors will enjoy a special journey where geology and ecology come together, delighting in the majestic meanders of Donggang and the spring-blooming Donggang Pasqueflower."
