United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned both the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran as well as Iran's retaliatory attacks, urging the immediate resumption of negotiations.
According to the Associated Press, Secretary-General Guterres attended an emergency meeting convened by the United Nations Security Council on the 28th (local time) and stated, "There is a risk that military operations could trigger an uncontrollable chain reaction." He went on to condemn both the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, as well as Iran's subsequent retaliatory attacks on neighboring countries such as Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Secretary-General Guterres stressed, "Everything must be done to prevent further escalation," warning that "if not, an even larger conflict could erupt, causing enormous consequences for civilians and regional stability." He added, "The United States, Israel, and Iran must immediately resume negotiations so that the region-and the world-can step back from the brink."
The emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council was convened at the request of five countries: France, Russia, China, Colombia, and Bahrain. Separately, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany issued a joint statement on the same day calling for the resumption of nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. The three countries strongly condemned Iran's airstrikes on neighboring countries in the Middle East and emphasized, "Iranian leadership must seek a solution through negotiations."
