As the United States and Israel have launched attacks against Iran, it has been confirmed that, as of now, there are no safety issues concerning South Korea’s overseas military deployments, including the Dongmyeong and Cheonghae Units.
On February 28, the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff reviewed potential threats to the overseas deployment units and confirmed that there are currently no safety concerns regarding these units.
Jin Youngseung, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, held a direct video conference with the commanders of the overseas deployment units to receive updates on the current situation and instructed that the safety of military personnel stationed abroad, as well as South Korean nationals overseas, be managed as the top priority.
Previously, Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyubaek instructed relevant departments to immediately review the status of deployed units, including the Dongmyeong and Cheonghae Units.
According to the Associated Press and other sources, Israel’s Minister of Defense announced on February 28 (local time) that Israel had carried out a preemptive missile strike against Iran. In addition, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. military’s attack on Iran by posting on his social media platform, Truth Social, that American forces had begun a “large-scale combat operation” in Iran.
