President Lee Jaemyung appointed Eun-sik Park, the current Deputy Commissioner of the Korea Forest Service, as the new Commissioner of the Korea Forest Service on February 28.
Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Office of the President, announced this in a written briefing on the same day.
Spokesperson Kang introduced Park as "the right person to lead innovation at the Korea Forest Service, based on a thorough understanding and expertise in overall forest policies, as well as the ability to strengthen comprehensive wildfire prevention measures and enhance rapid wildfire response capabilities."
Kang further emphasized, "Commissioner Park is an expert with experience and expertise in forest policy, having served in key positions such as Director-General of the Forest Industry Policy Bureau and Director of International Forest Cooperation at the Korea Forest Service. He is also highly regarded for his outstanding ability to coordinate the opinions of various stakeholders, including local governments, forestry workers, and environmental organizations, based on smooth communication skills."
The new Commissioner Park recently served as Acting Commissioner of the Korea Forest Service during the recent wildfires in Hamyang and Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province. Spokesperson Kang added, "We expect the new Commissioner to establish a systematic wildfire preparedness system and strengthen wildfire response capabilities in preparation for the spring wildfire season."
Although the positions of Director of the Office for Government Policy Coordination and Minister of Oceans and Fisheries remain vacant, Spokesperson Kang explained that the appointment of the Commissioner of the Korea Forest Service was prioritized "because it is closely related to public safety."
