On February 27 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran, while also hinting at the possibility of further talks.
Before departing for a site visit in Texas at the White House that day, President Trump told reporters, "I am not satisfied with the fact that they (Iran) are not willing to give us what we absolutely must have," but added, "We will have additional discussions today." It appears that Iran is rejecting U.S. demands to give up its nuclear weapons program, uranium enrichment rights, and its stockpile of previously enriched uranium.
The United States and Iran held their third round of nuclear talks in Geneva, Switzerland the previous day, but failed to reach an agreement. Badr Albusaidi, Foreign Minister of Oman, the mediating country, stated that both delegations would continue "technical-level discussions" in Vienna, Austria, next week.
President Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction, saying, "I am not happy with the way they are negotiating," but left open the possibility of further talks, stating, "We'll see what happens."
However, it appears that the option of a U.S. "military strike" remains on the table if negotiations break down. Regarding the possibility of using force against Iran, President Trump said, "We have the greatest military in the world," and added, "I prefer not to use it, but sometimes you have to." When asked whether this could immediately lead to regime change in Iran, he replied ambiguously, "No one knows. It could happen, or it might not." However, when asked whether he had made a "final decision," he answered, "No."
During a speech in Texas that day, President Trump said regarding Iran, "A lot is happening, and we have to make big decisions," adding, "It's not an easy decision." He continued, "They (Iran) want an agreement, but if we do agree, it will be a meaningful deal," and added, "I try to pursue the most peaceful way possible, but they are very tough and dangerous people."
