Thrown into Dog Playground
No Harm to People or Pets
A local resident who threw a loaf of bread embedded with a fishhook into a dog playground due to complaints about loud barking has been apprehended by the police. Although there was a risk of serious injury if a pet dog had swallowed the bread, fortunately, no actual harm occurred.
The Naju Police Station in South Jeolla Province announced on the 27th that a man in his 60s, referred to as A, has been booked without detention on suspicion of attempted property damage and is currently under investigation.
A is accused of throwing a loaf of bread with a fishhook embedded into the Naju Dog Playground, located in Geumcheon-myeon, Naju, at around 6:50 a.m. on the 14th, and then leaving the scene.
According to the police investigation, A, who lives near the playground, committed the act out of dissatisfaction after the facility, which began a pilot operation earlier this month, saw an increase in visitors from outside the area and noise from barking dogs.
The bread in question was thrown into the playground inside a plastic bag, and another visitor discovered it and disposed of it in a trash can. It has been confirmed that no dogs were harmed or suffered any damage as a result.
The police applied the charge of attempted property damage based on the current Civil Act, which classifies pet dogs as "property." The police plan to further investigate the exact motive and circumstances of the crime.
Meanwhile, Naju City has used this incident as an opportunity to install QR codes at the entrance of the dog playground, so that only citizens who have registered their animals with the local government can enter.
