1 Billion Won Received Deemed Criminal Proceeds
The police are moving to freeze the assets of independent lawmaker Kang Seonwoo, who is suspected of receiving nomination bribes.
According to police and other sources on the 27th, the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has requested a pre-indictment preservation of Kang's assets worth 100 million won from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. The police have determined that the amount received by Kang constitutes criminal proceeds. Pre-indictment preservation is a system that prevents criminal suspects from arbitrarily disposing of assets obtained through crime before a court ruling. If the prosecution files for preservation and the court approves, the assets will be frozen until a final verdict is reached.

Kang Seonwoo is suspected of receiving nomination bribes worth 100 million won from Kim Kyung, a former member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, ahead of the local elections in January 2022.
The police believe that Kang used the 100 million won as a deposit for a lease. Kang, however, claims that he returned the 100 million won to former council member Kim.
A pretrial detention hearing (warrant review) for Kang is scheduled for March 3.
