The Geumsan Strawberry Research Association (President Na Won) held the 1st Geumsan Strawberry Contest on February 26 in the multipurpose education room of the Geumsan Agricultural Center, and as a result of the judging, the Vitaking variety grown by Lee Hwanhee in Jewon-myeon was awarded the grand prize.
This event was organized to objectively evaluate strawberry quality and discover outstanding farms, with the goal of producing premium agricultural products.
The event was attended by a total of 50 people, including 10 judges and 40 research association members.
Thirteen member farms submitted a total of 15 entries across five varieties: Seolhyang, Geumsil, Kingsberry, Vitaking, and Honghee. The entries were evaluated based on overall criteria, including sweetness, texture, aroma, color, size, and packaging condition.
Other award-winning farms included: the Kingsberry from Park Wanchun’s farm in Namil-myeon and the Seolhyang from Jeong Jinhyun’s farm in Buri-myeon, both receiving the excellence award; and the Seolhyang from Park Songhee’s farm in Jewon-myeon, the Seolhyang from Gil Choonseop’s farm in Buri-myeon, and the Seolhyang from Jeon Byeongjun’s farm in Namil-myeon, each receiving the merit award.
This event was independently organized by the research association, and with the cooperation of the PR team at the Geumsan Agricultural Technology Center, an on-site video was produced and will be used for promotional purposes.
The Geumsan Strawberry Research Association currently has 58 members, with a total cultivation area of 15 hectares (4.5 hectares for seedlings and 10.5 hectares for cultivation).
From 2023 through this year, the association has been enhancing competitiveness through multi-layered cultivation systems, heating and cooling facilities, unmanned pest control, and the dissemination of new variety technologies.
The main variety grown is Seolhyang, accounting for 83% of the total, followed by Jukhyang (8%), Geumsil (2%), and other varieties (7%).
An official from Geumsan County stated, "Through this contest, we were once again able to confirm the appeal of Geumsan strawberries," adding, "We will continue to enhance the value of the premium Geumsan strawberry brand through autonomous quality competition and technological innovation led by the research association."
