In March 1919, our people courageously declared independence, undaunted even in the face of guns and swords, to defend freedom-a universal value of humanity. More than a century has passed since then, but the spirit of the March 1st Movement remains the foundation and driving force of the Republic of Korea today.
Kim Myoungsung, Veterans Affairs Department, Gyeongnam Eastern Regional Office for Veterans Affairs.
The Gyeongnam Eastern Veterans Office is responsible for fostering a culture of remembrance in the eastern Gyeongnam region, systematically managing and promoting local memorial sites. In our communities, there are many valuable assets that commemorate that historic day, such as the Memorial Monument for Patriot Heo Dang Myung Doseok in Changwon and the Memorial Sculpture for Hanmoe Lee Yoonjae in Gimhae.
No matter how remarkable a memorial site may be, its meaning inevitably fades if people do not visit. Honoring veterans is not just about grand slogans. As we mark the March 1st Movement anniversary, it begins with small acts of attention-taking a closer look at the memorial sites in our neighborhoods and expressing gratitude to their heroes. When we learn about our local history and respect its value, a culture of honoring veterans can truly take root in our daily lives.
If you are curious about where memorial sites are located throughout the country, you can find information through the 'Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Memorial Site Information Service.' It provides locations, details, and photographs of memorial sites related to the independence movement and national defense, serving as a convenient guide for anyone who wishes to learn about and explore Korea’s patriotic history.
This year, let’s go beyond simply displaying the Taegeukgi flag for the March 1st Movement anniversary-visit a nearby memorial site. By reflecting on the preciousness of this land protected by our forebears and keeping gratitude in our hearts, we will gain the strength to move toward a better future. I hope that 'living remembrance in everyday life' will take firm root throughout our local communities.
