Kim Hyochan, Sole Candidate, Fails to Secure Majority of Delegate Votes
In the presidential election of the Korean Medical College and Medical School Student Association (Korean Medical Student Association), the sole candidate failed to secure a majority vote and was defeated. The Association has decided to maintain its emergency response committee system for the time being.
Announcement of the election results for the President of the Korean Medical School and Medical Graduate Student Association announced on the 27th. Korean Medical Student Association
According to the Association on February 27, Kim Hyochan, a third-year student at Chonnam National University Medical School, who ran as the sole candidate in the 24th presidential election, received only 44.7% of the delegate votes on February 25, falling short of a majority. The presidential election of the Association is conducted through an indirect voting system, in which delegates representing each university cast their votes.
Immediately after the election, the Association convened an emergency delegates' assembly and, after discussion, decided to shift the organization to an emergency response committee system. With the defeat of the sole candidate, expectations for electing a president for the first time in five years have been dashed, and the leadership vacuum will continue.
Since the end of the executive board's term in 2021, the Association has been operating under an emergency response committee system due to its inability to elect a new president. After the resignation of the emergency committee chair last year, the chairperson group has been leading the Association. With this latest election also failing to select a president, the emergency response committee system is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
