Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 27th that it has signed an LNG purchase agreement with U.S. LNG producer Venture Global. Under this agreement, Hanwha Aerospace plans to secure 1.5 million tons of LNG annually for 20 years starting in 2030 and supply it to global demand centers in regions such as Europe and Asia. This volume is equivalent to about 4.4% of Korea's annual LNG consumption of approximately 34.12 million tons as of 2024.
This agreement is part of the group's strategy to build a "global LNG value chain." Hanwha Ocean has capabilities in marine infrastructure such as building LNG carriers and offshore floating liquefied natural gas production facilities (FLNG), while Hanwha Energy has experience in LNG power generation and operations. Hanwha Shipping is responsible for LNG maritime transportation. The group aims to complete a value chain spanning production, transportation, and utilization by leveraging the capabilities of its affiliates.
Hanwha Aerospace plans to use the LNG business as a future growth engine while also strengthening the global competitiveness of its existing core businesses, including defense and shipbuilding, based on its energy security capabilities. As the perception spreads that the energy supply chain is directly linked to national security, major countries such as those in Europe are adopting stable LNG procurement as a key strategy, which is cited as another driver behind the expansion of this business.
The company plans to use the LNG business as a lever to expand defense exports and strengthen security partnerships with customer countries. In line with this, an increase in LNG carrier orders for Hanwha Ocean is also anticipated.
A Hanwha Aerospace official said, "The defense, shipbuilding, and energy industries are closely interconnected in that they are key elements of national security," adding, "We will contribute to global security through eco-friendly energy solutions that cover everything from energy production to distribution and utilization."
Meanwhile, Hanwha Aerospace has been gradually expanding the foundation of its LNG business. In 2024, it invested about 180 billion won in U.S. LNG company NextDecade, and in 2025 it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Energy and Korea Southern Power to expand the global LNG supply chain.
