On a flight from Jeju to Gimpo, a passenger with autism spectrum disorder suddenly suffered a seizure in the cabin, but thanks to the swift and compassionate response of the crew and fellow passengers, the journey was completed safely. On February 24, a post titled "To those who were on the 2/23 Jeju-Gimpo Korean Air flight" was uploaded to the university online community "Everytime."
The author, referred to as Mr. A, wrote that his younger brother, who has autism spectrum disorder, had recently been experiencing seizures more frequently and had boarded a flight to Seoul with their parents to undergo an EEG test. However, during boarding, an emergency situation occurred when his younger brother suddenly had a seizure in the aisle and collapsed. According to Mr. A, once a seizure begins, his brother loses all muscle strength and, even after regaining consciousness, has difficulty supporting himself on his own.
Mr. A explained that his mother tried to hold him up but could not manage alone, and at that moment a male passenger nearby stepped in, lifted the fallen brother, and helped him into his seat. The flight attendants temporarily halted passenger boarding and immediately called emergency medical personnel, responding without delay. Fortunately, the younger brother regained consciousness and later was reported to have calmed down.
Mr. A said, "He has been having seizures every 2 to 3 weeks recently, and because he had one just the week before, I think our sense of tension had loosened a bit," adding, "It was the first time a seizure had occurred on board, so my parents were very shocked, but the people around us actively helped and offered warm words, which was a great comfort."
At the time, the flight was already delayed, but it is reported that, despite the additional delay, the passengers waited with understanding and without showing signs of discomfort. After landing, the crew also made an announcement allowing Mr. A’s family to disembark first as a courtesy. Mr. A said, "During takeoff and landing, everyone waited and understood without a single harsh word, and my parents were deeply grateful," adding, "I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who was on that flight."
