A civilian graduate student accused of sending unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to North Korea multiple times has been arrested and detained.

On the 26th, Senior Judge Boo Dong-sik of the Seoul Central District Court, in charge of warrants, issued an arrest warrant for Oh (32), who is suspected of the general crime of aiding the enemy and of violating the Aviation Safety Act and the Military Bases and Installations Protection Act, stating that "there is a risk of destruction of evidence and of flight."

Oh is suspected of having conducted test flights on four occasions from September last year to January this year, by programming UAVs that took off from Ganghwa Island in Incheon to fly over Kaesong City and Pyeongsan County in North Korea and then return to Paju in Gyeonggi Province.

The joint military-police investigation task force stated that Oh sought economic gains from a UAV business and intentionally heightened tensions, and that he triggered a condemnatory statement from North Korea, thereby threatening public safety and harming the military interests of our armed forces.

The investigative authorities are also reportedly looking into the possibility that the military and the National Intelligence Service were involved in the case.
