Focusing on Securing Budgets for Future Industries such as Semiconductors and Defense
On February 26, the city of Gumi in North Gyeongsang Province held a meeting at the National Assembly with members of the National Assembly to resolve major local issues and secure national funding, attended by about 30 people including district lawmakers Gu Jageun and Kang Myeonggu, Mayor Kim Jangho, and other senior city officials.
This meeting was organized to strengthen cooperation at the National Assembly level so that the key projects identified at the “Strategy Briefing Session for Securing the 2027 National Investment Budget” held on February 6 can be effectively reflected in the government’s budget proposal.

In particular, Gumi has been proactively responding to the government’s “Five Axes and Three Special Zones” ultra-wide-area cooperation strategy, which is a national policy task, and the policy direction of realizing the Era of Local Autonomy. The city focused on discussing cooperation plans and sharing strategies for expanding the base of future high-tech industries such as semiconductors, defense, and AI-based manufacturing, as well as for strengthening social overhead capital (SOC) infrastructure.
Key pending projects discussed included: expanding the wide-area transportation network and improving residential conditions by building the Gumi-New Airport railway and establishing Donggumi Station; securing future growth engines by creating a semiconductor materials and components complex and attracting a specialized cluster for defense industry materials, components, and equipment; realizing a “romantic city” by attracting the National Museum of Korean History and developing the Nakdong River Waterfront Leisure Park; and laying the foundation for balanced national development by easing the criteria for designation as a large city and designating Gumi as a Free Economic Zone.
The main projects requiring national funding included: establishing a shared factory specialized in AI and defense; building the National AI Future Talent Education Center; supporting AI data processing for small and medium-sized local flagship enterprises; providing demonstration support for AX autonomous manufacturing cyber-convergence security; constructing an expressway between Gumi and Gunwi; building a new bridge connecting Industrial Complexes 1 to 3; creating a carbon-neutral leading city; and implementing a comprehensive flood risk and living-zone improvement project in the Dogae District.
The members of the National Assembly who attended the meeting stated, “Since the projects discussed today are essential tasks that will determine a better future for Gumi, we will thoroughly review the trends and key issues of each project.” They also expressed their intention to actively pursue efforts to secure national funding by maintaining close communication throughout the entire process, from the drafting of the government’s budget proposal to the final stage of deliberation at the National Assembly, so that the major projects can ultimately be reflected in the government budget.
Gumi Mayor Kim Jangho said, “This meeting is the first step in implementation that will lead Gumi’s major projects to concrete results,” adding, “We will build a full-fledged ‘One-Team’ cooperation system with the district lawmakers and concentrate all administrative capabilities on securing future-oriented budgets that will drive Gumi’s new leap forward.”
