Kolon Spaceworks Ships First 700-Bar Hydrogen Storage System

First Unit Delivered at Haman Plant on the 26th
Full-Fledged Entry into the Hydrogen Engine Truck Market

Kolon Spaceworks, an advanced composite materials solutions company, is making a full-fledged entry into the hydrogen commercial mobility market by mounting its independently developed 700-bar (70 MPa) ultra-high-pressure hydrogen storage system on a hydrogen engine truck.

Kolon Spaceworks announced that on the 26th it held a delivery ceremony for the first hydrogen storage system to be installed on a hydrogen engine truck currently under development by Tata Daewoo Mobility at its Haman plant in Gyeongnam. The event was attended by CEO Ahn Sanghyun and about 20 other key officials, who officially declared the company’s entry into the hydrogen commercial mobility market and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening technological competitiveness and building a supply system to support future market expansion.

The hydrogen storage system delivered this time is an integrated solution that covers the entire process from hydrogen storage to supply. It is a vehicle-mounted module co-developed over an extended period with Tata Daewoo Mobility, measuring approximately 2.5 meters in length. It is designed to efficiently manage and control multiple hydrogen tanks, with top priority placed on safety throughout both the charging and driving processes.

In particular, the system connects seven large-capacity hydrogen tanks certified by the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS), securing stable performance and reliability even in ultra-high-pressure environments. The company explained that it has proven the safety of hydrogen engine truck operation through a dual safety verification system consisting of system-level leak-tightness tests and separate inspections of both the tanks and the system.

Kolon Spaceworks plans to gradually expand the scope of commercialization by conducting additional performance verification and data collection under actual driving and operating conditions. Through this, the company aims to enhance its commercial competitiveness in the hydrogen mobility market and broaden its business domain across the entire hydrogen storage and supply infrastructure.

The hydrogen storage technology secured through this project also offers scalability that allows it to be applied to a wide range of platforms, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles. Because the number and layout of tanks can be optimized to match the capacity and spatial requirements of each vehicle type, the company expects to be able to provide an integrated solution that covers not only hydrogen engine vehicles but also hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

CEO Ahn said, "This achievement marks the starting point that shows our high-pressure hydrogen storage system technology has been applied to an actual hydrogen truck and has entered the commercialization stage," adding, "Taking the supply of hydrogen storage systems as a momentum, we will spread differentiated technological solutions across the entire hydrogen storage and supply infrastructure."

Meanwhile, Kolon Spaceworks, which was officially launched in 2024, is building an integrated technology platform that encompasses everything from design to manufacturing in advanced industrial sectors such as aviation, mobility, defense, and space. As a materials solutions company expanding from sea and land to the sky and even outer space, it is strengthening its position as a key partner in future industries.
