Lease Deposits Block Housing Before Monthly Rent... Gwangju Offers Housing Support to 46 Single-Parent Households

46 Rental Units Available
Up to Six Years of Residency
Applications Accepted Until March 6

Gwangju Metropolitan City will provide lease deposit support to low-income, homeless single-parent families to help stabilize their housing. The city will provide an average deposit of 7.5 million won, and allow tenants to reside for up to six years.

On February 26, the Gwangju city government announced that it is recruiting 46 households for its "Single-Parent Housing Support Program," targeting low-income, homeless single-parent families who are willing to become self-reliant. A total of 46 rental units have currently been secured in the region.

This program is a system that supports lease deposits for rental housing in order to ease housing cost burdens for single-parent families and help them establish a stable foundation for daily life. Those selected as tenants receive support for a deposit of around 7.5 million won on average. However, they must pay the monthly rent and maintenance fees themselves (which average 170,000 won per month), as well as an additional move-in deposit of 700,000 won.

Contracts are signed for two-year terms, and after a review for extension, tenants may stay for up to six years. The city explains that this makes mid- to long-term housing stability possible.

Alongside housing support, the city will also run programs to promote self-reliance. Counseling and in-kind support are provided through case management, and in the case of group homes, employment training and educational expenses are supported. If a childcare gap arises, the program will also connect families to child care services.

Applications are accepted year-round, but the first intensive application period runs until March 6. Final tenants will be selected after deliberation by the Tenant Selection Committee, and the screening is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. on March 13.

Consultations and applications for move-in are handled by the Gwangju Dong-gu Family Center. Relevant information can also be found through the QR code provided in the promotional materials.

Choi Kyunghwa, Director of the Women and Family Bureau, said, "We hope that this housing support will serve as an opportunity for single-parent families to raise their children in a stable environment and lay the groundwork for self-reliance," adding, "We will continue to expand policies that support the livelihood stability and self-reliance of vulnerable families."
