On the 25th, the Jaseng Medical Foundation announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Liberation Association for a "Scholarship and Medical Support Program for the Descendants of Independence Patriots" at the Korea Liberation Association Hall in Yeouido, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by Shin Minsik, Chairman of the Social Contribution Committee at the Jaseng Medical Foundation, and Lee Jongchan, Chairman of the Korea Liberation Association, among others.
The two organizations plan to honor the contributions of independence patriots and support the educational environment and health promotion of their descendants. Beneficiaries will be selected next month after recommendations from the Korea Liberation Association and subsequent eligibility verification.
The scholarship support will total 20 million won, providing 4 million won each to five students. Medical support will be provided to 100 people, with a limit of 2 million won per person. The total size of the support program is approximately 220 million won. Beneficiaries will be able to receive consultations and prescriptions at 21 Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospitals and clinics nationwide.
According to an estimate by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs in 2021 on the income levels of households eligible for veterans benefits, 46.3% of the total were found to be below 30% of the median income. This has led to calls highlighting the strong need for economic support.
The background to this program is known to have been influenced by Shin Gwangryeol, an independence patriot and the father of Dr. Shin Junsik, the founder of Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital. After serving time at Seodaemun Prison for his anti-Japanese activities, Shin Gwangryeol continued his work by treating independence activists.
The Jaseng Medical Foundation has continued veterans-related social contribution programs over the years. It has promoted content contests on the themes of female independence activists and hidden independence heroes, as well as livelihood support projects for the families of patriots. In recognition of these efforts, it recently received the "25th Patriots and Veterans Culture Award" hosted by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
Park Byungmo, Chairman of the Board of the Jaseng Medical Foundation, stated, "Honoring independence patriots and their descendants is a duty that society must uphold," adding, "We hope that support for education and medical care will help them lead more stable daily lives."
