Professor Lee Hogyu of Yonsei University College of Medicine Appointed Associate Editor of Leading Cardiology Journal "Circulation"

Published by the American Heart Association with a 100-year history
First Korean medical scientist appointed Associate Editor

Professor Lee Hogyu of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Yonsei University College of Medicine was recently appointed Associate Editor of "Circulation" (IF 38.7), the official journal of the American Heart Association and one of the world’s most prestigious journals in the field of cardiovascular medicine. This is the first time that a Korean medical scientist has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the main journal of Circulation.

According to Yonsei University Medical Center on February 26, Circulation is the flagship journal among the 13 academic journals published by the American Heart Association. It boasts the longest history and the highest authority in the cardiovascular field. Only about 5% of the thousands of manuscripts submitted to Circulation each year are accepted for publication.

An Associate Editor is responsible for initially selecting which submitted manuscripts will be sent for peer review, assigning and overseeing reviewers and the review process, and making decisions on final acceptance or rejection to be reported to the Editor-in-Chief or presented to the editorial board.

Professor Lee Hogyu is a first-generation physician-scientist in epidemiology who obtained his board certification in internal medicine and a Ph.D. in preventive medicine through the Yonsei physician-scientist training program. He has published numerous papers in top-tier journals in each subfield, including the three leading cardiovascular journals: Circulation, the European Heart Journal (IF 35.7), and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (IF 22.3). In 2023, he received the Young Medical Scientist Award of the Boonshik Medical Award, the most prestigious medical prize in Korea.

He is currently serving as a board member of the Korean Society of Hypertension and the Korean Society of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, a member of the guideline committee for the management of hypertension and dyslipidemia, a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA) and a member of its Council on Cardiovascular Kidney Metabolic Health (CKM), and an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the official journal of the European Society of Cardiology.

Professor Lee Hogyu stated, "As the capabilities of Korean researchers have reached the highest level globally, this is a time when international leadership and a strong sense of responsibility are required. At a time when the number of medical papers is surging worldwide, I will work to uphold the rigor of the research ecosystem and help ensure that Korea’s outstanding research achievements are fairly recognized on the international stage."

Meanwhile, the 12th editorial board, led by Professor Bradley Maron (University of Maryland), who has been appointed the new Editor-in-Chief of Circulation, will go through a transition period starting in April and is scheduled to begin publication with the first issue of the first week of July.
