President Lee Jaemyung and the First Lady visited the special exhibition "Our Yi Sun-sin" at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 26th. The special exhibition "Our Yi Sun-sin" was organized to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Liberation and the 480th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
Opened on November 28 last year, this exhibition is the National Museum of Korea's first special exhibition dedicated to Yi Sun-sin. Focusing on the records left by Yi Sun-sin, the museum sheds three-dimensional light on his true character beyond that of a wartime hero. A total of 369 items in 258 sets are on display, including 15 National Treasures such as his autograph manuscripts of "Nanjung Ilgi" (War Diary), "Imjin Jangcho" (Imjin War Reports), and "Seogancheop" (Letters), as well as 43 Treasures including Cheonjachongtong and Jijachongtong cannons.
In particular, seven autograph volumes of the War Diary are on display, allowing visitors to see not only his heroic side shown in a series of naval battles from the Battle of Hansando to the Battle of Myeongnyang and the Battle of Noryang, but also his human side. Visitors can also view the war from the perspective of Japan, the invading country. For the first time in Korea, artifacts kept by Japanese daimyos are being released to the public, including the helmet and spear of the Tachibana Muneshige family and the folding screen "Battle of Ulsan Japanese Castle" long held by the Nabeshima Naoshige family.
Accompanying the President and the First Lady on the tour were Yoo Hongjun, Director of the National Museum of Korea, Yoo Saerom, curator, and Kim Mikyung, Head of the Product Business Division at the Korea National Museum Cultural Foundation. The exhibition, which is organized into four sections covering Yi Sun-sin's victories, trials, reflections, and posthumous remembrance, was guided by curator Yoo Saerom. After viewing the exhibition, President Lee also visited the museum shop, guided by Director Kim Mikyung.
