Likely to Ignite Controversy Over Disregard for Judicial Authority
Emphasizes Possession of Other Tariff Authorities
U.S. Vice President JD Vance also launched a blistering attack on the Supreme Court, which ruled reciprocal tariffs illegal, denouncing it as an act of "lawlessness." Such remarks from Vance, who is the second-highest-ranking official in the administration, are expected to fuel controversy over disregarding the authority of the judiciary.
On the 20th (local time), Vice President Vance wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the Supreme Court’s ruling that reciprocal tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) are illegal amounted to "clear lawlessness."
Vice President Vance said, "Today, the Supreme Court decided that even though Congress gave the president the power to 'regulate imports,' that is not actually what it means."
Vice President Vance criticized the ruling, saying that "the only effect of the Court’s decision is to make it harder for the president to protect American industrial and supply chain resilience." He went on to stress, "President Trump still holds other sweeping tariff authorities, and he will use them to protect American workers and advance this administration’s trade priorities."
Meanwhile, President Trump, at a press conference held at the White House shortly after the Court’s ruling that reciprocal tariffs are illegal, announced that he would impose new tariffs to replace the IEEPA-based reciprocal tariffs. As part of this plan, he said he would implement a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act as early as within three days, and simultaneously proceed with country-specific tariff investigations under Section 301 of the same law.
