Brief written statement issued without a separate briefing
On the 19th, Song Eonseok, Floor Leader of the People Power Party, issued a statement regarding former President Yoon Suk Yeol's first-instance sentencing, saying, "I fully recognize our party's responsibility for the guilty verdict handed down to a former president produced by our party," and adding, "I feel deeply apologetic to our party members and to the people."
Floor Leader Song said, "I hope this ruling will serve as an opportunity to reaffirm the principle of the rule of law that in the Republic of Korea, everyone is equal before the law and no one can stand above the law."
He went on to stress, "The People Power Party will deeply reflect on the historical and political significance of this ruling, and we will draw a clear line against any forces or any acts, in the past, present, or future, that threaten and destroy the constitutional order."
Finally, Floor Leader Song added, "The People Power Party will adopt a more humble attitude in order to regain the trust of the people and will fully carry out its duty to safeguard the constitutional order and liberal democracy of the Republic of Korea."
On the same day, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced former President Yoon to life imprisonment in the first trial on charges of being a ringleader in a rebellion in connection with the December 3 Martial Law.
