"Citizens of the Republic of Korea" Who Overcame the December 3 Martial Law Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize... President Lee Calls It "A Model in Human History"

According to Kim Euinyoung, professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Seoul National University, on the 19th, several political scientists, including former and current presidents of the International Political Science Association (IPSA), recommended all Korean citizens (Citizen Collective) to the Nobel Committee as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize this past January.

The nominators referred to the efforts of citizens who blocked the illegal martial law as the "Revolution of Light," and it is reported that they agreed it is a global model case in which a constitutional crisis was overcome through non-violent civic engagement without civil war or repression.

On this basis, Professor Kim, who served as chair of the organizing committee for the IPSA World Congress in Seoul last July, submitted to the Nobel Committee an English explanatory document that included an overview of the "Revolution of Light," its historical background, and its international significance.

Professor Kim stated, "At a time of global democratic backsliding, did the whole world not watch in amazement as Korea overcame an insurrection and restored democracy in just six months?" He added, "At the center of that process was the power of our people, what is often called the resilience of democracy."

President Lee also responded to the news on X (X, formerly Twitter), writing, "This was possible because it was the Republic of Korea, a great nation of Daehan people that will stand as a model in human history," and added a message of support: "The Republic of Korea gets it done!"

Previously, in his "Special National Address on the First Anniversary of the Revolution of Light," delivered on December 3 last year, President Lee said, "I am convinced that the Daehan people fully deserve to receive the Nobel Peace Prize," and added, "If the Daehan people are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, it will mark a great turning point for all countries shaken by conflict and division."
