Text Messages From the County Office
Now Easy to Verify as "Official Institution Sender"
As phone and text message scams impersonating public officials have recently been spreading nationwide and causing a series of financial damages, especially to small business owners, Hamyang County in South Gyeongsang Province has launched a response to block crimes impersonating the county office in advance.
Hamyang County announced that, as the risk of text message crimes impersonating the county office is growing, it plans to convert all text messages sent by the county to a "Safe Text Message Service."
The Safe Text Message Service is a service that provides the label "Verified Sender Number" in the message content for sender numbers certified by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), helping recipients easily check whether the received text message was actually sent by an official institution.
In particular, the county plans to provide this label together with the Hamyang County emblem so that residents can intuitively verify that all text messages sent from the county office, including civil complaint guidance, are official messages.
The county plans to complete preliminary procedures for the service transition in February and, after a pilot operation in March, begin full-scale service.
An official from Hamyang County said, "Financial scams impersonating public institutions have recently been spreading nationwide, so preventing damage to residents is more important than anything else," adding, "From now on, text messages sent by Hamyang County will carry the 'Verified Sender Number' label so that residents can check them with peace of mind."
