Live Broadcast to Begin at 3 p.m. on the 19th
The first-instance verdict for former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is charged as the ringleader of an insurrection, will be broadcast live from 3 p.m. on the 19th.
On the 11th, the 25th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Ji Guyoun) announced that it had granted broadcasters' requests to air live coverage of the first-instance sentencing for former President Yoon. Video of the sentencing hearing, filmed with the court's own equipment, will be transmitted to broadcasters in real time. However, the court explained that delays in transmission may occur due to technical circumstances. Although the court did not separately state its reasons for approval, it has so far allowed live sentencing broadcasts only for cases that serve the public interest and attract a high level of social attention.
Former President Yoon is accused of staging an uprising for the purpose of disrupting the constitutional order, including by declaring an unconstitutional and unlawful emergency martial law on December 3, 2024. Special Counsel Cho Eunseok's team for the insurrection case requested the death penalty for former President Yoon on January 13. On the same day, the court will also hand down sentences for seven key participants in the insurrection, including former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun, former Defense Intelligence Agency Director Noh Sangwon, and former National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Jiho, who are charged with performing critical duties in relation to the insurrection.
