Baby Delivered by Father 35 Years Ago
Now a Mother, She Gives Birth with Help from His Son
The story of an obstetrician father and son who, 35 years apart, each helped the same woman with her birth and later her own childbirth is touching many hearts.
According to Swijeumedi Hospital in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on the 10th, an expectant mother, Ms Jeong (35), delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 3.7 kg at the hospital on the 4th. Although she lives in Uijeongbu, she decided to give birth at this hospital, which is located dozens of kilometers away from her home.
Behind Ms Jeong's unusual decision lies a special connection that has continued for 35 years. She was born in April 1991 with the help of Hospital Director Lee Giho, who now runs Swijeumedi Hospital. At that time, before Director Lee opened Swijeumedi Hospital in Ingye-dong, Suwon, he was operating a clinic called "Lee Giho Obstetrics and Gynecology" in nearby Yeonmu-dong.
Growing up, Ms Jeong often heard from her mother that she had been born healthy thanks to Director Lee's help, and she always felt grateful. As time passed and she became pregnant with her precious baby, she heard from her mother, who lives in Suwon, that Director Lee was still practicing, and she decided to give birth at his hospital.
For a time, Ms Jeong visited an obstetrics and gynecology clinic near her home in Uijeongbu, but as her due date drew closer, she began receiving checkups at Swijeumedi Hospital. About three weeks before her expected due date, her water suddenly broke and she rushed to the hospital, but thanks to the medical staff's swift response, she successfully delivered her baby without complications.
The doctor who delivered Ms Jeong's baby happened to be Director Lee Jihoon (42), the son of Director Lee Giho, who works at the same hospital. In other words, a father and son who both chose the path of obstetrics shared in the moments of birth across generations.
"When I found out that the two doctors who helped me and my baby were father and son, I was overwhelmed by the thought that I had given birth through such a special connection," Ms Jeong said. "I think the moment of childbirth will remain in our family's memory for a very long time." Director Lee Jihoon said, "As a member of the medical staff, it was a very meaningful experience, as I felt that I was welcoming the birth of life together with my father."
