At around 11:04 a.m. on the 9th, two people, including the pilot and co-pilot who had been unconscious, died in a military helicopter crash that occurred in Hyeon-ri, Jojong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do.
According to the Army, an Army Cobra AH-1S helicopter that was conducting emergency procedure training in the Gapyeong-gun area crashed for unknown reasons. The helicopter belonged to a battalion under the 15th Aviation Brigade. Emergency procedure training is a flight drill that involves making an emergency landing in a situation similar to an abnormal condition without shutting down the engine.
The two warrant officers on board were urgently transported to a civilian hospital after the accident but were confirmed dead.
The Army stated that, after the accident, it suspended operations of helicopters of the same model and formed an accident countermeasure headquarters, led by the acting Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army Headquarters (Chief of Logistics), to determine the cause of the crash and other details.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyu-baek, who is visiting Saudi Arabia on this day, was briefed locally on the accident and ordered the Army to make every effort to ensure a swift and thorough response and follow-up measures.
