Unable to find lodging, they used a gas heater in the car
Believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning
A father and son who had come to hike Mount Deogyu were found dead inside a vehicle. Police are placing greater weight on the possibility of a carbon monoxide poisoning accident, given that a gas heater was on inside the car.
According to Muju Police Station and other authorities on the 8th, at 12:10 a.m. the previous day, Mr. A (57) and his 10-year-old son, Master B, were found inside a vehicle parked in a parking lot in Seolcheon-myeon, Muju County, North Jeolla Province.
Police said they went to the scene with 119 paramedics after receiving a report from the family that "my husband and son, who went hiking, cannot be reached," and found the two, but they were already dead.
When they were found, a gas heater was operating inside the car. Mr. A and Master B are reported to have come from Pohang on the 6th to hike Mount Deogyu, but, after failing to find lodging, they fell asleep in the car.
Police believe they died after turning on the heater and falling asleep in the sealed vehicle, leading to carbon monoxide poisoning, and are investigating the exact cause of death and the circumstances of the accident.
