"Projection: Liberal Democratic Party to Win 274-328 Seats"
Japan's House of Representatives election (general election) is projected to result in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party securing a majority of seats.
NHK reported that, according to an exit poll conducted immediately after voting ended at 8:00 p.m. on the 8th, "The Liberal Democratic Party is projected to win between 274 and 328 seats, making not only a single-party majority certain but also raising the possibility that it could reach as many as 300 seats."
The Liberal Democratic Party previously held 198 seats. In the general election in October 2024, it lost its single-party majority for the first time in 15 years.
The projected number of seats for the coalition partner, Nippon Ishin no Kai, was between 28 and 38.
Accordingly, the ruling coalition as a whole is expected to secure between 302 and 366 seats. Exit poll results indicate that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Nippon Ishin no Kai together could win at least 310 seats, which is two-thirds of the total 455 seats in the House of Representatives.
Three hundred ten seats is the threshold required in the House of Representatives to initiate a constitutional amendment proposal. In addition, if the ruling parties hold at least 310 seats in the House of Representatives, they would be able to pass, through a second vote in the lower house, bills that were voted down in the House of Councillors, where the opposition currently holds a majority.
