Ruling and Opposition Unite in Support for the Opening of the Milan Winter Olympics

As the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics kicked off on the 7th (Korea time), the ruling and opposition parties sent messages of support, wishing the national team success.

Jeon Sumi, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, said in a written briefing that day, "We send enthusiastic applause to the grand journey of peace and friendship of young people from around the world that will unfold on the white snowy fields of the Alps," adding, "We express our deep respect to all members of the Republic of Korea national team, who have silently overcome battles with themselves to stand here today."


She continued, "We earnestly hope that the time of endurance spent in training will lead to valuable results at these Olympics," and prayed, "We hope you will fully enjoy the Olympic stage itself with pride in representing the Republic of Korea."


Song Eonseok, floor leader of the People Power Party, wrote on Facebook that day, "More than 3,500 athletes from 93 countries around the world, including the 130-member Republic of Korea delegation, have spent a long time sweating for this moment," adding, "We wish our national team great success and hope that the sweat and dreams of all participating athletes around the world will blossom beautifully."


Ham Inkyung, spokesperson for the People Power Party, also stressed in a commentary, "The People Power Party will not let this end as a momentary interest, but will take responsible action to build a sustainable sports system so that athletes in ice and snow events, as well as those in less popular disciplines, can train stably and demonstrate their abilities under fair support, and to strengthen the foundation for youth sports and improve treatment for athletes."
