Han Jeongae, Chair of the Policy Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea, said at the "Party-Government Consultation to Strengthen Responses to Personal Information Leaks" held on the morning of the same day at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, "At present, it is virtually impossible for individuals to prove negligence on the part of companies responsible for personal information leaks."
Chair Han said, "Personal information protection is now a fundamental responsibility of the state to safeguard public trust and everyday life," and added, "We must strengthen corporate accountability, including legal compensation for damages, regardless of whether negligence is found in relation to the leak."
She continued, "We must also prevent secondary damage caused by large-scale leaked personal information," stressing, "There needs to be a legal basis to punish and hold liable those who illegally distribute leaked personal information."
She went on to say, "We need to enhance the effectiveness of personal information investigations," adding, "When personal information leaks occur, it is difficult to conduct swift investigations because companies do not cooperate, so we must introduce measures such as corrective investigation orders to ensure the effectiveness of investigations."
In response, Song Gyeonghee, Chair of the Personal Information Protection Commission, said, "We will ensure strict sanctions and effective compensation for damages in personal information leakage incidents that meet public expectations," adding, "Through measures such as preventing the illegal distribution of leaked personal information and strengthening the security of personal information in everyday smart devices, we will do our utmost to deliver efforts that the public can tangibly feel."
