Part of pledge to expand party members' sovereignty

The 'one person, one vote system', regarded as a key campaign pledge of Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Cheongrae, was finally approved on the 3rd.

The Democratic Party of Korea announced that the amendment to the party constitution, which introduces a one person, one vote system for delegates and dues-paying party members, was passed with the approval of a majority of all incumbent members of the Central Committee.

The related vote, held over two days on the 2nd and 3rd, was attended by 515 out of a total of 590 Central Committee members (87.29%). Of these, 312 members (60.58%) voted in favor and 203 (39.42%) voted against, thereby meeting the requirements for approval, according to the Democratic Party of Korea.

This amendment was carried out as part of leader Jung's pledge to expand party members' sovereignty. Its core is to abolish the weighting currently given to delegates' votes in elections for the party leader·and members of the Supreme Council (national convention).

The amendment to the party constitution was previously voted down by the Central Committee in early December last year. After leader Jung pushed for it again, it cleared the Central Committee hurdle in about two months.

At the Central Committee meeting that day, an agenda item on the Central Party's financial management plan and budget review and approval was also passed. This item was approved with 491 (95.34%) of the 515 Central Committee members who took part in the vote supporting it.
