Gokseong County in Jeollanam-do has gathered the voices of local residents to secure the region's practical interests in the ongoing discussions about the administrative and educational integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam.


According to Gokseong County on February 2, the county held the "Jeonnam Gwangju Special City Administration and Education Integration Public Hearing" at the Dongak Art Hall of Gokseong Leisure and Culture Center on January 30.


More than 400 people attended the public hearing, including Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Kim Daejung, Superintendent of Jeollanam-do Office of Education, Josangrae, Mayor of Gokseong County, Kang Daegwang, Chairman of the Gokseong County Council, local community leaders, village heads, and residents, demonstrating a high level of interest in the integration.


The event began with an opening ceremony, followed by an explanation of Jeollanam-do's administrative integration plan and a presentation by the Provincial Office of Education on the direction for educational integration. Afterwards, the governor, superintendent, and mayor took the stage to engage in an in-depth discussion with residents about the integration.


At the event, Gokseong residents proposed specific issues for local development.


The main proposals included: ▲ the establishment of the "Seomjingang River Basin Environmental Office" to prevent frequent flood damage in the Seomjingang and Boseonggang river basins; ▲ supporting the branding of Gokseong as a garden city and hosting international events by attracting the "2031 Gokseong International Garden Expo"; ▲ and the balanced placement of industrial facilities to address regional disparities.


Gokseong County plans to closely coordinate with Jeollanam-do to ensure that the residents' opinions expressed at this public hearing are meaningfully reflected in the future integration process.


A Gokseong County official stated, "This public hearing was an important opportunity to listen to the vivid voices of residents and set policy directions in the face of the significant changes brought by the administrative and educational integration," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that Gokseong's local issues and development tasks are not neglected but are fully addressed throughout the integration process."
