Jeonnam Provincial Council Education Committee Chairperson Faces Controversy Over Dispatched Public Officials

Shaking Trust in Jeonnam Politics, a Democratic Party Stronghold
"Frequent Controversies Over Remarks and Behavior Weigh on the Democratic Party"

Since the end of last year, controversies have continued to surface in the western region regarding the issue of dispatched public officials accompanying K, the Education Committee Chairperson of the Jeonnam Provincial Council. Unexpected remarks and behaviors at various meetings have also become a source of controversy. While the main areas of dispute are Muan and Mokpo, where the provincial council is located, political accountability is also becoming a significant issue in Suncheon, which is K's constituency.

The controversy over dispatched public officials accompanying the provincial council, which erupted in Muan, has now gone beyond being an internal issue of the council and is fundamentally shaking the trust in the Democratic Party's local politics. Despite explanations that repeated travel to weekend party events was "within the rules," the lack of remaining records and the ongoing debate over the boundary between legislative work and party activities have been repeatedly pointed out as sources of controversy.

Previously, on June 23 of last year, during a discussion on future education at the Wando-gun Life Culture Center, K made remarks about a photo of Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, saying, "If I were the CEO, I wouldn't hire him. I'm better looking than this person," which left parents bewildered by such incomprehensible comments from the Education Committee Chairperson.

When asked for comment, K stated that the controversy over dispatched public officials had been resolved, and explained that the remark to parents about being "better looking than Jack Ma" was intended to emphasize that inner qualities are more important than appearance.

The reason these issues are not limited to Muan or Mokpo is because K's constituency is Suncheon.

Until now, this issue has been mainly reported by media outlets in the western region where the provincial council is located. However, since the current Education Committee Chairperson is a council member representing Suncheon, it has been pointed out that the way in which public authority was exercised inevitably leads to the same level of political accountability regardless of region.

Moreover, Suncheon has long been considered a stronghold of the Democratic Party and the political center of Jeonnam, known for its particularly strict standards regarding the morality, public-mindedness, and procedural legitimacy of politicians.

If the party fails to set standards when political controversies arise due to inappropriate remarks or actions by figures like K, voters may ultimately interpret the party's silence as a judgment in itself. At this point, the controversy is not merely about an individual's image, but raises doubts about whether the party is capable of self-purification and responsible politics.

In particular, what Suncheon voters scrutinize most closely during the nomination process is not "whether a problem occurred," but "what changed and how after the problem was raised." Whether the party has addressed the issue internally and taken responsible action should serve as important criteria in evaluating nominations.

This matter is not just about one individual, but rather raises questions about the standards by which Suncheon's politics will choose its representatives, and whether the Democratic Party maintains a certain level of responsibility and control in the exercise of public authority. During the nomination process, the party will inevitably face the sharp scrutiny and precise judgment of the citizens.
