Gokseong County in Jeollanam-do has entered a full-scale response mode by deploying dedicated personnel to prevent wildfires and protect forests ahead of the dry spring season.
According to Gokseong County on January 29, the county held the "Forest Disaster Response Team and Town and Township Wildfire Fighting Team Launch Ceremony" the previous day at the Gokseong County Future Education Foundation meeting room.
At the launch ceremony, team members reaffirmed their commitment to forest protection by reading a pledge and received occupational safety training to prevent accidents that may occur during field activities.
This year, a total of 61 people will be mobilized, including 28 members of the Forest Disaster Response Team and 33 members of the Town and Township Wildfire Fighting Team. To ensure efficient operation, the county has implemented a dual work period system. The Town and Township Wildfire Fighting Team will be intensively operated for five months in the spring and 45 days in the fall, while the Forest Disaster Response Team will be on duty year-round for 11 months.
In particular, the Forest Disaster Response Team will go beyond its previous role of simply extinguishing wildfires and will also conduct landslide prevention and pest monitoring activities during the summer, thereby carrying out systematic forest disaster management throughout the year.
As drier-than-average weather is expected this year, Gokseong County plans to strengthen monitoring activities in areas adjacent to forests and establish a rapid initial response system.
In addition, the county will enforce a zero-tolerance policy and strictly crack down on illegal activities such as unauthorized burning and cooking within 100 meters of forests or forest-adjacent areas.
A Gokseong County official stated, "The role of the response team, which is responsible not only for wildfire suppression but also for landslide and pest monitoring, is more important than ever. We ask that team members prioritize their own safety while on duty, and we urge residents to actively participate in forest protection."
