On January 29, Gumi Police Station announced that they had detained a man in his 40s, referred to as Mr. A, for questioning on charges including assault.
Mr. A is accused of assaulting a woman in her 40s, referred to as Ms. B, without any apparent reason at a bus stop in Indong, Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, at around 7:30 a.m. on January 23, while she was on her way to work. As a result of the assault, Ms. B reportedly suffered damage to four teeth and facial fractures, resulting in injuries that will require five weeks to heal.
A citizen who found Ms. B collapsed at the scene reported to the police, stating, "I saw a man running away." Responding to the report, police launched an investigation using nearby CCTV footage and eyewitness statements to identify Mr. A. The police subsequently arrested Mr. A at a location in Gumi at around 8:30 p.m. on January 28.
During police questioning, Ms. B reportedly stated, "Mr. A was smoking at the bus stop, and I made a face showing my displeasure. I think that might be why he assaulted me."
Mr. A is said to have admitted to most of the charges during the police investigation. The police plan to apply for a detention warrant after further investigating the exact motive for the crime.
Meanwhile, on January 26, the victim's acquaintance, identified as C, posted a message on the online community BobaeDream titled "Looking for Witnesses (Gumi Indong Bus Stop) Random Assault," appealing for help. The post included a CCTV capture image showing Mr. A fleeing the scene immediately after the assault. C stated, "The victim is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment," and appealed, "If you witnessed the incident or have any relevant information, please come forward."
