Nazi-Inspired Phrases on Official U.S. Accounts? NYT Reports Numerous Far-Right and Racist Traces

NYT Analyzes Official U.S. Government Social Media Posts
White Supremacist Song Referenced in ICE Recruitment Ads
White House Cites Title of Racist Book

There have been claims that traces of far-right and racist ideology have been found on official online accounts operated by the U.S. government.

On January 27 (local time), Yonhap News cited The New York Times (NYT) in reporting that "The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently included the phrase 'WE'LL HAVE OUR HOME AGAIN' in a joint recruitment advertisement for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which was posted together with the White House on Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter)."

Although this phrase appears to present a key objective of the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, it is also the title of a song frequently sung by the white supremacist group Proud Boys. In fact, when opening the advertisement post, the chorus of the song would play. Previously, in 2023, a white supremacist who killed three Black people at a store in Jacksonville, Florida, also included the lyrics of this song in his writings, sparking controversy.

According to the NYT, the White House recently posted a photo of a dog sled with the Greenland flag on its official X account, placing an image of the White House on a clear day on the left and images representing China and Russia on the right. It then asked, "Which way, Greenland man?" This question closely resembles the title of the book "Which Way, Western Man?", considered an introductory text for white supremacists, leading to claims that it was a parody. Previously, the ICE recruitment post also included the phrase "Which way, American man?"

On New Year's Eve last year, the White House posted on X a photo of President Trump with the term "remigration," which has also been criticized as reflecting far-right tendencies. The NYT noted, "This is a concept used by far-right groups in Europe to refer to the deportation of non-white immigrants who have not assimilated," and added, "Neo-Nazi members of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party shared the post."

Recently, the U.S. Department of Labor posted a video with the subtitle "One homeland, one people, one heritage," which evokes the Nazi German slogan from World War II, "One people, one empire, one leader."

The NYT reported, "Such phrases and symbols may be perceived by the general public as merely promoting patriotism or nationalism, but among those who subscribe to far-right ideology, they function as a kind of sign or code."

Jesse Daniels, a sociologist at Hunter College in New York, told the NYT, "In the past, (far-right) individuals were relegated to the dark corners of the internet," adding, "Now, they hold public office."
