SK Hynix to Establish 'AI Investment Control Tower' in the US...Considering New Corporation

"Reviewing Various Options Including Establishing a Corporation"
Control Tower Overseeing Investments in the AI Ecosystem
SK Group Continues Investments in Promising Semiconductor and AI Sectors

SK Hynix is reportedly considering establishing a corporation in the United States for investments related to artificial intelligence (AI). The plan is to consolidate AI investments from group affiliates into a single entity, thereby creating an overseas investment control tower.

On January 27, SK Hynix announced in a regulatory filing that it is "reviewing various options, including the establishment of a corporation for AI investments," and added, "We will make a public disclosure either when a decision is finalized or within one month." SK Hynix is expected to convene a board meeting soon to discuss the establishment of an overseas corporation dedicated to AI investments.

The new corporation is expected to serve as a control tower overseeing strategic investments in the AI ecosystem, including memory semiconductors. Until now, SK Hynix has operated SK Hynix America in Silicon Valley, United States, focusing on memory technology research, global partnerships, and local talent acquisition. The company is reportedly considering adding AI-related investment functions to this organization.

SK Group, the parent company of SK Hynix and an investment-focused firm, along with affiliates such as SK Square and SK Telecom, has continued to invest in promising semiconductor and AI startups. SK Telecom has invested in large language model (LLM) companies such as Perplexity and Anthropic, while SK Square has invested in AI infrastructure companies including SGH, which specializes in designing and operating AI data centers. The group has also made equity investments in TerraPower, a small modular reactor (SMR) company.
