Jungnang-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi) announced on the 27th that it has achieved the highest grade, "Excellent," for the second consecutive year in the 2025 Aerial Cable Maintenance Implementation Evaluation, organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
As an incentive for this evaluation, the district secured a total maintenance budget of 5.2 billion won-2.52 billion won last year and 2.72 billion won this year.
The aerial cable maintenance project involves organizing and removing tangled or sagging electrical wires and broadcast/telecommunication cables that resemble spider webs on roads and buildings, thereby improving the urban landscape and enhancing resident safety.
Last year, the district organized 270 utility poles and 82 telecommunication poles, totaling 12,705 meters of wires and cables in three areas: Myeonmok 4-dong, Junghwa 1-dong, and Muk 2-dong. In addition, the district is carrying out a project to standardize aerial cable entry facilities in two areas-Muk 2-dong and Sangbong 1-dong-by installing shared facilities to neatly organize cables entering buildings.
This year, the district plans to actively carry out maintenance projects, prioritizing areas such as residential neighborhoods, narrow alleys, and school routes where wires and cables are particularly tangled and require organization.
Meanwhile, the district is also promoting projects to improve the cityscape and pedestrian safety in conjunction with the undergrounding of aerial cables. Recently, 49 designer streetlights were installed along a 1.6-kilometer section of Mangwoo-ro, from Jungnanggyo to the Dongil-ro underpass, to improve nighttime walking conditions and enhance the streetscape.
Ryu Gyeonggi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, "Through community-focused projects like aerial cable maintenance, we will continue to systematically improve the urban environment," adding, "We will persistently promote maintenance projects to create safer and more pleasant streets in the future."
