On January 25, President Lee Jaemyung commented on the passing of Lee Haechan, Senior Vice Chairperson of the National Unification Advisory Council, stating, "Today, the Republic of Korea has lost a great mentor in the history of democracy." He added, "Just as a river, despite its curves, ultimately flows to the sea, the journey toward democracy, peaceful unification, and balanced national development that he so earnestly pursued will continue into the future."
The President expressed his condolences in a post on social networking services (SNS) that day, saying, "I cannot hide my grief at the news of his passing. On behalf of the Republic of Korea, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family."
The President continued, "Senior Vice Chairperson Lee dedicated his life to upholding and expanding the values of democracy amid the turbulent tides of modern history. The spirit he showed as a young man fighting for democracy was later transformed into sophisticated policy at the heart of government. Even when faced with the pressing challenges of the times, he never wavered in his principles and convictions, and demonstrated outstanding leadership by harmoniously balancing stability and reform."
President Lee went on to say, "In particular, by presenting a new national vision for balanced regional development and implementing innovative policies that enabled both the capital region and local areas to grow together, Senior Vice Chairperson Lee laid an important foundation for Korea's leap toward becoming an advanced nation. We remember his unwavering commitment to seeking the path of peace on the road to unification."
The President concluded, "Words cannot express the regret I feel at having to say farewell before we could realize the dreams we shared. I will long remember the precious political legacy he has left behind. I pray that Senior Vice Chairperson Lee may now lay down all his burdens and rest in eternal peace."
