Choi Eunsoon, Mother-in-law of Yoon Sukyeol, Ranked First Nationwide for Unpaid Personal Dues Last Year
Failed to Pay 2.5 Billion KRW Fine... 8 Billion KRW Building to Be Auctioned
Choi Eunsoon, mother-in-law of former President Yoon Sukyeol, who last year recorded the highest amount of personal tax arrears nationwide, ultimately failed to pay approximately 2.5 billion won in fines, resulting in her real estate assets entering the public auction process.
On January 21, the Korea Asset Management Corporation posted a public auction notice for Choi's building and land located in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul. The building, owned by Choi and located near Amsa Station on Seoul Subway Line 8, consists of one basement floor and six above-ground floors, and has been appraised at 8 billion won.
Previously, Gyeonggi Province and Seongnam City, the municipality where Choi resides, notified her to pay the fine by December 15 of last year. However, Choi only received the account number for payment and did not pay the fine.
In response, Gyeonggi Province and Seongnam City stated, "There are no exceptions to tax justice," and requested the initiation of public auction proceedings. They also instructed that the auction process be closely monitored to ensure the arrears are collected as early as possible.
According to Gyeonggi Province, Choi's real estate holdings include: ▲ 12 properties (all land) in Yangpyeong County ▲ 1 property (land) in Namyangju City ▲ 3 properties in Seoul (1 land, 2 buildings) ▲ 4 properties (land) in Chungcheongnam-do Province ▲ 1 property (land) in Gangwon-do Province.
Gyeonggi Province and Seongnam City decided to prioritize the public auction of the building in Amsa-dong, Seoul, considering it to be the most valuable among Choi's real estate assets. The actual bidding is expected to take place about two months after the auction notice is posted.
On January 20, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dongyeon announced on Facebook that Choi's real estate had entered the public auction process, stating, "Tax justice is a promise made by the entire community," and added, "We will hire additional collection personnel to uphold this principle."
Previously, Choi had failed to pay a fine of 2.505 billion won to Gyeonggi Province for violating the Act on the Registration of Real Estate under Actual Owner's Name, making her the individual with the highest amount of local administrative sanctions and surcharges in arrears last year.
